What causes venous leg ulcers or venous veins?
The root problem is the increase in blood pressure in the lower leg veins. This causes the fluids to ooze out of the venous veins and thicken, swell and damage the skin. The damaged skin then breaks down to form ulcer. The increased blood pressure problems in veins are due to the collection of blood in smaller veins next to the skin. The blood collects and pools which causes clots in veins and damages them. Gravity causes blood to glow back through the damaged veins which creates further problems.
What is the treatment for venous leg ulcers?
Just like any other wound, ulcers too are dresses the same way. Usually the wound is cleaned and the dressing is changed. However, this is not the best venous ulcer treatment option you have. It won’t work for severe or old ulcers. Other treatments include:
This is the most important form of treatments that aims to counteract the raised pressure in the leg veins. It also gives the best chance for the ulcer to heal. While bandaging, the nurse will put on layers of bandages and pressure is put highest on ankle and lesser towards knee and thigh. A support stocking over the dressing is used sometimes.
The bandages are reapplied every week. Make some extra efforts to keep your leg elevated before the nurse comes to visit you.
Elevation and activity
When you are resting, keep your legs raised higher than the hip. This is important especially in case your leg is swollen. The aim is let the gravity pull the blood and fluid in right direction, ie. Towards the heart. This causes reduction in swelling of leg and reduced blood pressure in the veins. Try to set 3 to 4 times per day of 30 minutes lying down while legs are being raised. You can lie on the sofa or bed and put your legs on the pillows. Do not spend all time resting. Keep yourself active for some part of the day. Take regular walk but do not stand for longer time period. Keep your leg raised while sleeping.
However, if you have some severe form of problem then it is best to see some surgeon. They not only will help you to deal with current problem but also let your safeguard yourself from recurring ulcers. Veins Center is one of the trusted source to gather information and free counseling for the same.
