Causes & Prevention of Varicose Veins

The Veins that become enlarged and twisted are known as the varicose veins.  Veins have pairs of leaflet regulators to prevent blood from flowing backwards, but when the veins become varicose, they do not work properly as the valves don’t tend to meet and so the blood starts flowing in the backward direction, which causes more swelling in the area. Varicose veins are generally found in the lower legs because of the pressure that our legs suffer while we stand for long durations.

  • The legs start to ache and become heavy, often after exercises of at night.
  • Appearance of the spider veins at the affected area.
  • Swelling in the ankle specially during the evening.
  • Cramps start to occur more constantly especially when making a sudden movement.
  • Minor injuries in the affected area may bleed more than it normally should or might take longer time to heal.
  • The affected area might become reddish, dry or itching may persist.

Varicose veins Causes:

  • Age: the veins start to lose their elasticity and they tend to stretch as you grow older and become weak allowing the blood reaching the heart move towards the opposite direction. The veins start to turn blue as they now start to contain deoxygenated blood.
  • Pregnancy: The volume of the blood is increased during pregnancy, but decreases the flow of blood from legs to the pelvis region. This circulatory system is made in order to help the fetus grow, but it might result into some sort of side effects, like, enlarged veins in your legs. Varicose veins may also get worse during late pregnancy, as the uterus starts to exert more pressure on the lower legs. Changes in the hormones during pregnancy may also play a role, due to which the varicose veins that gets formed during pregnancy are more likely to improve without medical treatment generally after three to twelve months of delivery.
  • Sex: Women are more likely to get varicose veins. Hormonal changes during pregnancy, pre menstruation or menopause may be a reason because female hormones tend to relax vein walls. Taking any hormone replacement therapy or consumption of birth control pills may increase this risk of having varicose veins.

Family history: this problem is also inherited, which is why if any of the member from your family suffers with this, you too can.

  • Obesity: the weight of your body increases the pressure on your legs, which gives rise to varicose veins.
  • Standing or sitting for long periods of time.

Prevention of Varicose Veins:

  • Avoid standing for long periods without taking any break.
  • When sitting, avoid crossing your legs. Keep your legs raised when sitting, resting, or sleeping.
  • Do physical activities to get your legs moving. This helps blood move through your veins.
  • Try to maintain your weight.
  • Avoid wearing tight clothes, generally the ones that are tight around your waist, groin or legs.
