Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive injection treatment used to eliminate spider veins (telangiectasia) and small-to-medium varicose veins. By injecting a specialized medical solution (sclerosant) directly into the affected vein, the vein walls are irritated and collapse. Over time, the body naturally absorbs the treated vein, causing it to fade from view. It is the preferred method for treating cosmetic vein issues.

Dr. Saurabh Joshi uses a fine needle to inject the sclerosant solution into the vein. For slightly larger veins, a “Foam” technique is used (mixing the solution with air) to cover a larger surface area inside the vessel. The procedure causes the vein to seal shut immediately. The blood flow is rerouted to healthy veins, and the visible “spider web” appearance fades over a few weeks.
Sclerotherapy is ideal for patients with:
Note: It is not a substitute for EVLA if you have major valve failure in the main Saphenous vein.
The number of sessions depends on the extent of the spider veins. Most patients require 2 to 4 sessions spaced a few weeks apart to achieve optimal cosmetic results.
The veins treated with sclerotherapy are permanently destroyed and absorbed by the body. However, if you have a genetic predisposition, new spider veins may appear in different areas over time.
