Uterine fibroids, also known as myomas or leiomyomas are non-cancerous growths or
lumps in or on the surroundings of the uterus. Uterine fibroids mainly appear in the age group 30 years to 40 years however one’s chances of having a fibroid in the uterus increases ever since hitting puberty due to an increase in the level of estrogen and progesterone.
Uterine fibroids are in no way associated with uterine cancer and they have an almost negligible amount of chance of developing into a cancerous cell.
Symptoms of uterine fibroids
.Most Common symptoms of uterine fibroids are:
● Leg pain, backache
● Constipation
● Heavy bleeding during menstruation.
● Frequent urination
● Pelvic pain or pressure around the pelvic region.
● Weight gain even if you are eating less and following a healthy diet and lifestyle.
Shape and Size of Uterine Fibroids
Uterine fibroids can be of different shapes and sizes. They can be as small as a seedling or can enlarge to big masses. If these fibroids enlarge into big masses they have the potential to distort and even make your womb look bigger.
Almost 80% of women have fibroids at some stage of their lives but most do not know about having one as fibroids often show no symptoms.
Causes of Uterine fibroids
Following are the potential factors that can cause uterine fibroids:
Hormones
As estrogen and progesterone are the main hormones that form the lining of your uterine walls
during menstrual periods, these same are the biggest factors that promote the growth of uterine
Fibroids.
Genetic
If your family (female members) has a history of uterine fibroids, you are too likely to develop
these at some stage of your life.
Pregnancy
Since the level of estrogen and progesterone increases dramatically during the pregnancy
phase, the uterine environment during this phase becomes a potential hub for the rapid growth
of fibroids.
