Varicoceles are one of the leading causes of male infertility, primarily because they affect the temperature regulation of the testes. For sperm to be healthy, they require a temperature slightly lower than the body’s core temperature.

However, a varicocele disrupts this cooling mechanism, leading to an elevated temperature in the testes, which can damage sperm production and quality. Men with varicoceles often have a lower sperm count, reduced sperm motility, and abnormal sperm morphology, all of which can make conception more challenging.

Varicocele repair, such as surgery or embolization, has been shown to improve sperm parameters and, in some cases, increase fertility rates. Not every man with a varicocele will have fertility issues, but for those trying to conceive without success, varicocele treatment may be a viable solution to improve fertility outcomes.
