What Are the Risks of Varicose Veins During Childbirth?

Varicose veins generally do not pose significant risks during childbirth, but there are a few considerations to be aware of. The increased pressure during labor and delivery can cause varicose veins to become more pronounced or painful. In rare cases, varicose veins near the vaginal area, known as vulvar varicosities, can cause complications during a vaginal delivery.

These veins can sometimes bleed if they are damaged during childbirth, though this is uncommon and can usually be managed by your healthcare provider. If you have significant varicose veins, especially in the pelvic area, your doctor may monitor them closely during labor and delivery to prevent any complications.

It’s important to discuss your concerns with your healthcare provider before childbirth, so they can plan for any potential issues and ensure a safe delivery for both you and your baby.

What is Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are swollen and enlarged veins that usually occur on the legs and feet. They may be blue or dark purple, and are often lumpy, bulging or twisted in appearance.

Any vein that is close to the skin’s surface (superficial) can become varicose veins. Varicose veins most commonly affect the veins in the legs. That’s because standing and walking increase the pressure in the veins of the lower body.
