What are varicose veins, and how do they form?

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that are visible just under the surface of the skin, typically on the legs. They occur when the valves inside the veins, which normally help direct blood flow back to the heart, become weakened or damaged. In healthy veins, these valves prevent blood from flowing backward.

However, when the valves fail, blood can pool in the veins, causing them to stretch and become varicose. The condition is often caused by factors such as prolonged standing, age, and genetic predisposition.

Over time, the increased pressure on the veins from the pooling blood can cause them to bulge and twist, leading to the characteristic appearance of varicose veins. Although often considered a cosmetic issue, varicose veins can also cause discomfort, pain, and more serious complications like venous ulcers if left untreated.
