What are venous ulcers, and how do they develop?

Venous ulcers are open sores that develop on the skin, usually on the lower legs, as a result of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). This condition occurs when the veins in the legs do not return blood to the heart efficiently, leading to increased pressure in the veins.

Over time, this pressure can damage the skin and underlying tissues, causing them to break down and form ulcers. Venous ulcers typically occur above the ankle and are often surrounded by discolored or thickened skin. They can be painful and are prone to infection if not properly treated. Factors contributing to the development of venous ulcers include a history of varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), obesity, and prolonged standing or sitting.

Treatment focuses on improving blood flow in the affected area, managing any infection, and promoting healing of the ulcer through dressings, compression therapy, and sometimes surgical intervention.
