What is a varicocele?

A varicocele is an abnormal enlargement of veins in the scrotum, similar to varicose veins that people get in their legs. These veins are called the pampiniform plexus, and they play an essential role in regulating temperature for the testes, crucial for healthy sperm production.

Varicoceles occur when the valves in these veins don’t function properly, causing blood to pool and the veins to swell. They are most commonly found on the left side due to the anatomy of the veins on that side, although they can also develop on both sides. Varicoceles are often diagnosed in adolescent males and can sometimes enlarge or worsen with age.

While not typically dangerous, they can lead to complications such as reduced testicular growth, pain, or infertility. Recognizing and treating varicoceles early may help prevent these issues, especially for men concerned about fertility or experiencing discomfort.
