What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a common and effective treatment for small to medium-sized varicose veins and spider veins. The procedure involves injecting a sclerosing solution directly into the affected veins. This solution irritates the lining of the veins, causing them to collapse and eventually be absorbed by the body. Blood flow is then redirected to healthier veins.

Sclerotherapy is typically performed in a doctor's office and takes about 30 minutes. Depending on the number of veins being treated, multiple sessions may be necessary. After the procedure, patients are usually advised to wear compression stockings for a few days to enhance results. Sclerotherapy is minimally invasive, with most people returning to normal activities immediately.

The treatment is particularly effective for smaller veins, such as spider veins, and can also be used for certain larger varicose veins. Side effects are typically mild and include temporary bruising, redness, or itching at the injection site.
