Stroke, also called as ‘Brain Attack’, occurs due to loss of blood flow to the brain. When the loss of blood supply is for a prolonged period, it can lead to permanent neurological damage or death. Many a time, fatty substancesline the inner wall of the blood vessels forming a plaque, thus narrowing the artery and reducing flow of blood to the brain. This is called the Carotid Artery disease, and is one of the primary causes for Stroke.
Pain in various forms is the first symptom of peripheral vascular/artery disease that may require a Leg angioplasty or peripheral angioplasty. The various types of pain are ache, or cramps in the legs when walking or exercising; ache or pain in the calf, foot or buttocks and thighs. This could disappear when taking rest and reappear when there is activity. Other serious symptoms that require fast action are non-healing ulcers, leg weakness, numbness, coldness, tingling and change in color of the foot skin. A Leg artery angioplasty is a proven treatment method. Dr. Saurabh Joshi, our principal consultant is an expert in peripheral angioplasty in Mumbai.
We don’t just treat patients. We bring joy back to people’s lives.
Besides these factors, family history, old age, and a sedentary lifestyle that is becoming common in fast paced mega polis’ like Mumbai, Bangalore, and so on are also major causes of a Peripheral artery disease.
Angioplasty inflates a tiny balloon in the narrowed segment of the artery, compressing the plaque against the blood vessel. When the plaque is resilient to dilatation/compression and recoils back, a Stent (fine wire mesh tube) is inserted and then gently expanded to open the vessel and restore blood supply. Over a period of time, lining of artery will slowly grow over the stent, permanently incorporating it into the artery wall.
Leg artery angioplasty and stenting procedure is Non-surgical, and requires No General Anaesthesia. The patient can go back home in a day or two.
Prevention of stroke takes high precedence as it can cause irreversible neurological damage. This is possible by medical intervention as well as lifestyle changes to keep fit and reduce cholesterol. Medical intervention in prevention of stroke is decided after conducting multiple tests,by way of vascular surgery or carotid angioplasty. Carotid angioplasty, also called as Carotid stenting is a non-surgical and minimally invasive procedure.
Carotid stenting is a contemporary treatment method. This minimally invasive procedure is performed in a catheterization laboratory by an Interventional Radiologist (IR). In the carotid stenting procedure, a stent (a small mesh tube) is introduced in thediseased/narrowed portion of the artery under local anaesthesia, and gently expanded to open up the blood vessel. A Filter device is placed distally to capture dislodged plaque fragments.Dr. Saurabh Joshi, the chief Interventional Radiologist of the Vein Center,is experienced in carotid angioplastyprocedures in Mumbai.
Carotid Endarterectomyis thevascular surgeryperformed to treat patients with carotid atherosclerosis or mild strokes. An incision is made in the neck at the carotid artery. The plaque and diseased portions are surgically removed; then re-sewn back together to allow improved blood flow to the brain. This method of treatment is a full-fledged surgical procedure and requires hospitalization.
